Old Mexico Prickly Pear (Opuntia gomei 'Old Mexico')

Old Mexico Prickly Pear brings bold texture and a strong desert look to sunny landscapes with a softer, more sculptural presence than many heavily armed prickly pears. Its broad, wavy pads and spreading habit make it especially useful where a dramatic low-water plant is needed to anchor a xeriscape, gravel garden, or warm-climate border. This selection offers the architectural impact people want from a cactus while being easier to place visually in ornamental designs. For gardeners looking for an unusual specimen with strong drought tolerance and standout form, it is a memorable choice.

Distinctive Features

Old Mexico Prickly Pear is prized for its large, light green pads with undulating, scalloped edges that give the plant a ruffled and highly distinctive appearance. It is generally described as a mostly spineless or nearly thornless selection of Opuntia gomei, though small glochids may still be present and should be handled with care. In late spring to summer, bright yellow flowers appear against the pads, followed by reddish-purple fruit that adds another layer of seasonal interest. Mature plants commonly form a broad shrubby mass about 3 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 8 feet wide, with an upright to spreading habit.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Plant in full sun for the best pad color, strongest growth, and most reliable flowering.
  • Soil: Grow in sharply drained sandy, gravelly, or rocky soil, since wet or heavy soils can quickly lead to root problems.
  • Water: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings once established.
  • Zones: Best grown outdoors in USDA Zones 8 to 11, with some growers reporting good performance into Zone 7 in very well-drained sites.
  • Habit: This is an upright to spreading prickly pear with a broad shrubby form and large flattened pads.
  • Bloom and Fruit: Yellow flowers appear from late spring into summer and are often followed by reddish-purple fruit.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a focal point in xeriscapes and gravel gardens where the broad wavy pads can create a bold sculptural statement.
  • Rock Gardens: Plant among stone and gravel where its unusual form and low-water nature feel especially natural.
  • Dry Borders: Use in hot sunny borders where a large textural plant can anchor the planting and contrast with finer companions.
  • Warm-Climate Landscapes: Add to frost-free or mild-winter gardens where it has room to develop its full shrubby character.
  • Screening: Plant where a loose, low screen or barrier effect is useful in water-wise landscapes.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering Routine: Water sparingly once established, since this cactus performs best when allowed to dry well between waterings.
  • Drainage: Make sure the site drains very well, especially in winter, because excess moisture is more damaging than drought.
  • Handling: Handle carefully, since even nearly spineless forms can carry irritating glochids.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth only if needed, as rich conditions can encourage weaker growth.
  • Cleanup: Remove damaged pads as needed using gloves or tongs to keep the plant tidy and manageable.

Why Choose Old Mexico Prickly Pear?

  • Unique Pad Shape: The wavy scalloped pads give it a more ornamental and unusual look than many standard prickly pears.
  • Low-Water Performance: Once established, it handles heat and dry conditions with very little fuss.
  • Showy Flowers: Bright yellow blooms add strong warm-season color against the light green pads.
  • Broad Landscape Presence: Its spreading shrubby habit gives it enough size to function as a true structural plant in the design.
  • Collector Appeal: It offers a more distinctive and less typical look for gardeners who want something beyond common cactus selections.

Old Mexico Prickly Pear is a strong choice for gardeners who want bold cactus texture, unusual pad form, and dependable drought tolerance in one plant. In xeriscapes, rock gardens, and sunny warm-climate borders, it creates a memorable focal point with very manageable care needs.

A Beta Worth Rooting For
Format: Kindle
In Spare, Violet Fox flips the omegaverse on its head, giving us a Beta heroine determined to make her mark. Joining the Beta Trials to support her sick father, she's thrown into a pack that doesn't want her, especially the possessive Alphas. But here's the twist: their sweet Omega turns out to be her scent match. Cue the angst, forbidden tension, and a slow-burn romance that will make your heart ache in the best way. Violet Fox delivers an emotional, refreshing take on the genre, proving Betas aren't "spares." They're stars.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

Good start to a series
Format: Kindle
I delayed reading the series for reasons I don’t remember. But my TBR list is huge so I thought I’d take a shot of this and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t think the blurb about it was anything special. But it was a very good book. It took some interesting twists and turns. I am so glad the second book is already out. Because I would not have waited patiently. Very slow burn but good storyline. 🔥🔥/5

A good read
Format: Kindle
Multiple points of view. 3 Alpha men and an Omega male. She is a Beta in training for a new program placing betas in Alpha/Omega packs. Mila is only doing the program for the money to take care of her dad. She wasn't expecting to fall for a pack but when she sees this packs Omega she is done for. There is just something about him. His Alphas are good looking as well. Too bad she is hiding a secret and their government is acting shady. I liked it and can't wait to see where their story goes.
