Pineapple Guava Uses in Phoenix Landscapes

Edible Privacy Hedge

Pineapple Guava's dense evergreen canopy makes it one of the best edible hedge plants for Phoenix. Plant 6–8 feet apart for a continuous fruiting screen that reaches 10–15 feet. A 20-foot fence line needs 3 plants; a 40-foot run needs 5–6. The silvery foliage and showy spring blooms make this hedge beautiful even when not fruiting.

Specimen Fruit Tree

Planted as a standalone specimen, Pineapple Guava becomes a stunning small tree with a naturally rounded canopy. Its showy white-and-crimson flowers are edible themselves — sweet and crunchy, perfect for salads. The fall fruit tastes like a blend of pineapple, guava, and mint. Plant near a patio or kitchen garden for easy harvest.

Pool-Friendly Ornamental

The evergreen foliage, minimal leaf drop, and tidy growth habit make Pineapple Guava an excellent choice near pools. The silvery-green leaves catch the light beautifully, and the plant stays lush and full without excessive maintenance. Pairs well with Mediterranean Fan Palm and Pomegranate for a resort-style edible landscape.

Best Time to Plant Pineapple Guava in Phoenix

Fall (October–November) is the ideal planting window. Warm soil promotes root establishment while cooler air reduces transplant stress, giving the plant 6–8 months before summer heat. Spring (February–April) is the second-best option. Avoid summer planting — fruiting shrubs need extra care during establishment and are more vulnerable to heat stress.

How to Plant Pineapple Guava

  1. Dig wide, not deep — 2–3× the root ball width, same depth as the container.
  2. Check for caliche — break through any hardpan layer for drainage.
  3. Backfill with native soil mixed with 20% compost for a light nutrient boost.
  4. Spacing — 6–8 feet apart for hedge; 10–12 feet for standalone specimens.
  5. Water basin — build a 4–6 inch berm to hold water during deep soaks.
  6. Mulch — 3–4 inches of bark or wood chip mulch, keeping it 4 inches from the trunk.

Watering Pineapple Guava in Phoenix

First Year Watering Schedule

Weeks 1–2: Every 1–2 days, deep and slow (20–30 minutes). Month 1–2: Every 3–4 days. Month 3–6: Every 5–7 days (every 3–4 days in peak summer). After Year 1: Every 7–10 days in summer; every 2–3 weeks in winter.

Drip Irrigation

Use two 2-GPH emitters placed 12–18 inches from the trunk on opposite sides. Increase water slightly during fruit set (spring–summer) for larger, juicier fruit. Established plants are remarkably drought-adapted for a fruiting species.

How fast does Pineapple Guava grow in Phoenix? It is a moderate grower adding 1–2 feet per year. Expect fruit production within 2–3 years from a gallon-sized plant, sooner from larger specimens.

Do I need two plants for fruit? Most Pineapple Guava varieties are partially self-fertile, but planting two or more shrubs significantly increases fruit set and yield. For the best harvest, plant at least two.

Can Pineapple Guava handle full Phoenix sun? Yes, it thrives in full sun and handles reflected heat well. In extreme summer heat, afternoon shade can reduce fruit drop but is not required.

What does Pineapple Guava fruit taste like? The fruit has a unique tropical flavor combining pineapple, guava, and mint with a slightly gritty texture similar to pear. Eat it fresh, add to smoothies, or use in jams and baked goods.

Meyers Lemon — Prolific lemon tree with sweet, thin-skinned fruit perfect for Phoenix backyard orchards.

Navel Orange — The classic Arizona citrus tree delivering sweet, seedless oranges every winter.

How Many Pineapple Guava Do I Need?

For an edible privacy hedge, space Pineapple Guava about 7 feet apart on center so the canopies knit into a solid 10 to 15 foot screen. For standalone specimens, give each plant 10 to 12 feet. Use this as a starting guide at 7 foot hedge spacing:

Hedge / fence length Plants needed (7 ft spacing)
20 ft 3 plants
40 ft 6 plants
60 ft 9 plants

For fruit, plant at least two: the shrubs are only partly self-fertile, and a second plant nearby dramatically improves fruit set.

Pineapple Guava Season-by-Season in Phoenix

  • Spring (Feb–Apr): Showy white-and-crimson flowers open (the petals are edible) along with a flush of silver new growth. A strong second window to plant.
  • Summer (May–Sep): Fruit sizes up through the heat. The shrub tolerates reflected heat off walls, though a little afternoon shade reduces fruit drop in the worst of it. Bump up water slightly during fruit set; monsoon rains (Jul–Sep) are welcome.
  • Fall (Oct–Nov): Harvest season: the egg-sized green fruit ripens and drops when ready, tasting of pineapple, guava, and mint. Also the prime planting window in the Valley.
  • Winter (Dec–Jan): Holds its silvery evergreen foliage all winter. Hardy to about 15°F, so no frost protection is needed in Phoenix.

Plant It With

  • Pomegranate: a heat-loving fruiting companion with red blooms and sweet-tart fruit for an edible hedge.
  • Improved Meyer Lemon: Phoenix's favorite backyard citrus rounds out a kitchen-garden planting.
  • Fig Tree: one of the easiest, most productive desert fruit trees to grow alongside Feijoa.
  • Red Grapefruit: a classic Arizona citrus that extends the harvest into winter.

Is Pineapple Guava Right for Your Yard?

It is an excellent fit when you want one plant to do two jobs: an evergreen screen or specimen plus an edible harvest, in full sun with reasonably draining soil. Plant two for the best fruit set and give it room to reach 10 to 15 feet. It is not the right pick for a tight, deeply shaded spot or a low-water bed where you never plan to irrigate, since fruiting quality drops off without occasional deep watering through fruit set.

Very thorough and efficient cleaning
Color: Black, Size: L40 Ultra Gen 2
I've been using Roomba vacuums and mops for about fifteen years now, and truly loved them. My Braava mop recently wasn't working well, so I started researching again for the best robot mop. Anytime I've done that before, it was always a Roomba product that seemed to be rated best, but this time it was this Dreame dual vacuum and mop - I hadn't even heard of Dreame. Based on reviews and price, I decided to go for it. I am LOVING this machine! It cleans significantly more thoroughly AND faster than any Roomba I've had. My main floor is probably around 1500sq. ft. My previous Roomba took about 6 hours cleaning it. The Dreame takes just over 2 hours, and results in a noticeably cleaner floor. I have a lady that comes and cleans part of my house once a month, and she thought I must have done an extra intensive clean of my floors for an event. I hadn't told her anything about the new machine, but she noticed a significant difference in the cleanliness of my floors. It's great with picking up dog hair that is everywhere in my house. It has a strong suction for rugs - the door mats used to still have dust that I could shake out after Roomba went over them, not anymore. And I used to have to get down and scrub the area around my dog's food and water dishes because Roomba couldn't mop up that mess. I haven't had to do that in the two months or so since I've had Dreame. I thought it was really strange that it didn't come with the container for the cleaning solution, but thought I'd try it for awhile just with water. So far, I haven't found a reason to pay extra for that container or the solution! Water alone is doing a thorough job! The timer feature works very well, and I appreciate that it sends me a text notice when a particular part needs cleaning or adjustment or whatever. And it includes a link to show where that part is and what to actually do. The communication of the maintenance of the machine has been very good so far. I used to have Roomba run daily, but I have Dreame just running three days a week, and I have cleaner floors! It DOES talk loudly, such as, "Cleaning mop pads." But you can time it to run when the talking won't bother you. Overall, it's a good bit quieter than my Roomba. It gets louder when it's vacuuming rugs, but most of my floor is hard wood or tile, so it's mainly relatively quiet. The two aspects that were better with Roomba were that Roomba fit under my couches to clean (this is too tall), and it was significantly easier to clean hair out of the omnidirectional wheel and brushes of Roomba. I paid $550 for this, and it has been WELL worth the money!

Very Easy Warranty Claim Process!!
I have purchased a lot of Asurion warranties for products on Amazon over the past 5 years. This is the first time I've had to use the warranty. The Tineco vacuum mop that I purchased wasn't working well at all. I looked online to see how to file a warranty claim with Asurion. I had purchased the top line Tineco almost 3 years ago and my warranty was for 3 years. I was concerned that there might be an issue due to the amount and/or because the warranty was getting close to the end of the warranty period (3 years). Filing the claim was all online and walked you through all of the steps - very easy to follow and understand. They emailed a shipping label to me (they paid for shipping) and sent the Tineco to them. I figured it would be a lengthy and difficult process. After they received everything, they promptly denied the claim and closed the it. They said my personal information didn't match. I called them and discovered that since I was using a different email address, they couldn't match it up. The customer service agent changed the information and refiled the claim for me. I received another shipping label and used it to ship the Tineco back to them. They notified me when they received the Tineco and told me they would let me know after the repair department had looked at it. I received notification within a few hours that they could not fix it and would issue an Amazon Gift Card for the price that I paid for the Tineco (no tax included, of course). The Gift Card was in my account within a few hours! That had to be the easiest warranty claim I've ever made! I highly recommend Asurion for their warranties. The only thing I would suggest is that they change the warranty documentation to make it clear that they need the email address you filed the claim under and give you a place to put your new email address, if it has changed. I will not hesitate to continue to purchase Asurion warranties for products on Amazon! I like the idea of the monthly claim amount that is available for $16.99 per month, but you would have to buy a lot of products and warranty them for that to be equitable. I did the math and realized that I would have to purchase warranties for products that total $2,039 - $4,078 per year, every year (based on the charge of 10%-15% per warranty) to equal what I would pay for the individual warranties. I don't buy that many products that need warranties though, so it's not a value for me at all. IF I purchased the monthly warranty ($16.99 per month) and later decided that I didn't want to continue to pay that amount, none of my products would be warrantied! So, I had to really think about it first. I couldn't justify the monthly charge forever for the amount of products I purchase that can be warrantied. } Asurion - please consider offering the same warranty at a lower price per month - maybe you could put a cap on the dollar amount allowed to make it feasible for everyone. I would be very interested if the price wasn't so much.

Well, worth it
Well worth it my robot vacuum stopped working properly. It would not find it’s station and would wonder until the battery died. I was able to get a refund and buy a replacement.

Fast and no hassle protection of your expensive product purchases
Had an issue with my expensive floor cleaning robot breaking after less than 2 years (i.e. 1 year in to this 3 year extended protection plan). After submitting an online claim, they sent me a 1 page form to fill-out and provided a shipping label to return the large and heavy robot. Within 3 days, they sent me an email saying they couldn't repair it and provided a FULL-REFUND via an Amazon gift card # which successfully credited to my Amazon account.
