Glandularia canadensis, often called rose verbena, clump verbena, rose vervain or homestead purple verbena, is a beautiful native perennial plant from Texas. It thrives in prairies, fields, pastures, rocky meadows, and along roadsides. This charming clumping and sprawling plant typically grows between 6 to 18 inches and spreads quickly with its soft, sprawling stems that root at the nodes when they touch the ground, creating a lovely ground cover.
From late spring to late summer, Glandularia canadensis dazzles us with its flat-topped clusters of beautiful rose-pink to rose-purple flowers atop upright stems. Its deeply lobed, dark green leaves have a unique triangular shape at the base.
For many years, it was known as Verbena canadensis, and some respected organizations, like The Royal Horticultural Society, still refer to it by that name. However, the new edition of Steyermark's Flora of Missouri (by Yatskievych and Turner) recognizes it as Glandularia canadensis. Many plant experts now view Glandularia as a unique and distinct genus from Verbena, based on various characteristics like plant structure, chromosome numbers, style lengths, reproduction methods, and ploidal levels (as discussed in Umber's 1979 work, "The Genus Glandularia (Verbenaceae) in North America").
This lovely plant is easy to grow in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils, flourishing in full sun. Just be sure to avoid wet, poorly drained soils, as it self-seeds beautifully under ideal growing conditions.
